Peter May was born on 16 October 1920, the son of Archibald Victor May and his wife Esther Mary. He joined Westminster Bank in May 1937 at its Bristol Redland branch. A bank colleague later recalled, 'in his three years in that office he won the respect of all for his ability and hard work and their affection for his cheerful personality.'
In July 1940 May left the bank to join the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. He completed his training in Rhodesia and Scotland before being posted to active duty as a Sergeant Observer. He was reported missing following operations over enemy territory on 26 January 1942, and was later presumed to have died on that date. He was 21 years old.
