Patrick Murray
Bank: Westminster Bank
Place of work: Exmouth branch
Died: 8 December 1942
Patrick Hatton Murray (known to his bank colleagues as Pat) was born on 27 June 1918, the son of Robert Kyle Murray, a journalist, and his wife Ethel Emilie. He had two older brothers, Leslie and Herbert.
The family lived in Plymouth, and in 1935 Pat followed in the footsteps of his eldest brother Leslie by joining the staff of Westminster Bank, at its Plymouth branch. The following year he transferred to Exmouth branch.
In September 1939 Pat left the bank to join the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Flight Sergeant Murray served as an air gunner on many operational flights, but was killed in action on 8 December 1942. He was 24 years old.
Pat's brother Herbert, a Lieutenant in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve, had been killed in action just over two years earlier. Their surviving brother, Leslie, remained in Westminster Bank for the rest of his career, eventually becoming its Company Secretary before his retirement in the mid-1960s.
