He joined his father’s bank, National Provincial Bank, as a probationer at Leeds Union Bank branch in February 1929 and was promoted to junior clerk in May of that year. He moved to Sheffield Wickerbranch in 1931 and was shortly promoted to clerk. Over the next few years Mallinson spent time working at the bank’s branches in Driffield, Grimsby Docks and, from 1937, Long Sutton. His colleagues knew him as a keen nature and animal lover, a great sportsman, and popular with all.
Outside work Mallinson was a Territorial soldier, and at the outbreak of war in September 1939 he was called up for full time military service. He served in the Middle East with the Nottinghamshire Yeomanry before obtaining his commission in July 1941 and transferring to the West Yorkshire Regiment. In April 1943 Mallinson was posted to the India Command, and in November 1943 he was promoted to Captain. Captain Mallinson died on active service in Burma on 15 June 1944. He was 32 years old.
