John Pitcairn Millar was born on 13 April 1919, several months after the death of his father, also John Pitcairn Millar, in France in the First World War. He was raised by his widowed mother, Sybil.
In April 1937 he went to work for Westminster Bank at its Bournemouth West branch, where he was known to his colleagues as 'Jack', and was remembered as 'a man of most friendly disposition...he was always welcome in the homes of every member of the staff'.
In January 1940 he left the bank to go on war service, joining the Gordon Highlanders. Lance Corporal Millar was killed in action in Italy on 4 January 1945. He was 25 years old. His headstone was inscribed, 'So kind, so thoughtful, so greatly missed.'
