John Arthur Messenger was born on 17 October 1910, the son of Annie and Philip Messenger. He worked for Coutts & Co, London.

 

Messenger entered the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve as a Paymaster Sub Lieutenant in July 1934. He was mobilised at the time of the Munich crisis and a year later joined HMS Galatea as Paymaster Lieutenant serving in her during operations in the Mediterranean and off the coast of Norway. Paymaster Lieutenant Messenger was killed on 15 December 1941 when HMS Galatea was torpedoed and lost in the Mediterranean. He was 31 years old.

 

John Messenger is commemorated on a bank memorial at Coutts & Co, London 440 Strand.
