John Richard Pentreath Mann was born on 8 November 1920, the son of Horace Benjamin and Mabel Emily Mann. He was educated at Seaford College in West Sussex, and joined Westminster Bank at its London Stockwell branch in 1937. He was a member of the bank's staff sports club and played hockey on the staff team.
In July 1940 Mann left the bank to go on war service, becoming a Flight Sergeant (Observer) in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. He was posted to the Middle East in July 1941. He was killed in action on an operational flight there on 8 April 1942. He was 21 years old.
