Herbert Alfred Masters was born on 26 June 1920, the son Elise and Alfred E Masters. He was educated at Bournemouth School. He joined the staff of National Provincial Bank as a probationer at its Bournemouth Westbourne branch in May 1938. He was promoted to junior clerk in November 1938.
In December 1940 Masters left the bank to go on military service, joining the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. On 24 February 1944, Masters was flying an Avro Lancaster III, participating in a raid on Schweinfurt. He died when his aircraft was shot down and crashed at Tiefenbronn, Germany. He was 23 years old.
