Harry Walker Millar was born on 2 May 1923, the son of Alison and Alexander Walker Millar. He was educated at George Watson's College, Edinburgh, and joined the staff of National Bank of Scotland at its Edinburgh Gorgie branch in 1939.

 

As soon as he turned 18 in 1941, Millar volunteered for the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. He underwent training as an observer in South Africa before being posted to operational duties. Sergeant Millar was killed on 13 July 1943 when his plane was lost on a bombing raid over Turin. He was 20 years old.
