Harry Mayne

Harry William Mayne was born in Eyeworth, Bedfordshire, on 24 March 1912, the son of Robert and Lilian May Mayne. He was educated at Parkfield School, Biggleswade and Magdalen College School, Oxford.

 

In February 1932 he joined the staff of Westminster Bank at its Hitchin branch. In April 1936 he moved to Woburn Sands branch. Outside work he was an enthusiastic sportsman, captaining his local cricket club and playing for North Bucks Hockey Club. He also enjoyed tennis and rowing.

 

In August 1940 Mayne left the bank to go on war service, becoming a Sergeant in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. In August 1942 he was taken ill while at home on leave. He was taken to hospital, where he died on 19 August 1942. He was 30 years old.

 

Harry Mayne is commemorated on a bank war memorial at NatWest Milton Keynes branch.
