Gordon Edgar Roberts Medway was born on 10 November 1920, the son of Arthur and Elsie Medway. He was educated at Royal Liberty School and Worthing High School for Boys. He joined the staff of Glyn, Mills & Co in April 1938 at its Child & Co office. 

During the Second World War Medway left the bank to go on war service, joining the Bedfordshire & Hertfordshire Regiment. Second Lieutenant Medway was killed on active service in Belgium on 22 May 1940. He was 19 years old.
