George Morton Mason was born on 27 September 1917, the son of Eleanor and George Mason. He was educated at Middlesbrough High School. He joined the staff of National Provincial Bank as a probationer at Guisborough branch in June 1934. He was promoted to junior clerk in September 1934, and to clerk in 1936. He moved to Darlington branch in 1939.
In September 1939, Mason left the bank to go on war service in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Flight Sergeant Mason was killed on 18 April 1942 when his Vickers Wellington was shot down during a raid on Hamburg. He was 24 years old.
