Frederick George Miell was born on 4 November 1916, the son of Jessie and Arthur Charles Frederick Miell. He was educated at Nottingham High School. He joined the staff of National Provincial Bank as a probationer at NottinghamHigh Street branch in January 1934. He was promoted to junior clerk in April of the same year, and to clerk in 1936 before moving to Newark branch. His father, Arthur Charles Frederick Miell, was at this time manager at the bank’s West Bridgford branch.
In September 1939, Miell left the bank to go on military service in the Royal Artillery. In May 1940 he received his commission, becoming a Second Lieutenant. He later rose to the rank of Captain. His commanding officer later described how ‘Freddie always seemed to get into the place where the fighting was thickest and where there was a real job to be done’. On 5 November 1944, a shell struck Captain Miell’s observation post, killing him instantly. He was 28 years old and left a his widow, Rosemary, whom he had married in 1943. Miell’s commanding officer later wrote to Rosemary, describing Miell as ‘one who must have been one of the best in the world’.
