Alfred Mundy
Bank: National Provincial Bank
Place of work: Bristol Ashton Gate branch
Died: 18 December 1945
Alfred Clifford Mundy was born on 19 June 1908, the son of Alfred Simmonds and Julia Florence Mundy. He was educated at Tiffin Boys' School. He joined the staff of National Provincial Bank as a probationer at its London head office in September 1924. He was promoted to junior clerk in March 1925. He moved to Kingston upon Thames branch in 1926 and was promoted to clerk in 1927. Mundy then moved to Dover branch in 1932 and Bristol Ashton Gate branch in 1934. In July 1935 Mundy married his wife Dorothy Mabel. Their son was born the following year.
Prior to the outbreak of the war, Mundy volunteered for the National Fire Service and aided during early enemy air raids on Bristol. In October 1941 Mundy left the bank to go on military service, joining the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. His service involved working on codes and cyphers. In 1942, he travelled to New York for pilot training. He subsequently saw service in Iceland, Canada, Newfoundland, Costa Rica and Brazil, and would write to his colleagues at the bank of his experiences. He trained in the United States of America during 1942, after which he returned to Britain for active service. On 18 December 1945 he was a passenger on a flight from Copenhagen to Fornebu, Oslo, which crashed into high ground in poor visibility, killing five of those on board, including Flying Officer Mundy. This would have been Mundy’s final flight before his release from military service. He was 37 years old and left his widow, Dorothy, and their young son.
