Jonathan Thorburn Lindsay was born on 11 May 1915, the son of William and Margaret Wightman Lindsay of Dundee. In April 1934, shortly before his 19th birthday, he went to work for the Royal Bank of Scotland as an apprentice at its Dundee Stobswell branch. Three months later he transferred to Dundee Murraygate branch. He returned to Stobswell in April 1938, before transferring to Dundee High Street branch in December 1939.
In June 1940 Lindsay left the bank to go on military service, and by 1943 he was a Lieutenant in the Black Watch, on active service in North Africa. He died of wounds received in action there on 1 May 1943. He was 27 years old.
Jonathan Lindsay is commemorated on a bank war memorial at 36 St Andrew Square, Edinburgh.
