John Lucas

John Cyril Lionel Lucas was born on 14 January 1920, the son of Cyril and Norah Lucas. He joined Westminster Bank at its London Paddington branch in September 1937, and a few months later transferred to London Gloucester Road branch. 

 

Outside work Lucas was a keen territorial soldier. He was mobilised on the outbreak of war in September 1939, and after a short time in England was posted to the Middle East with the Royal Artillery. Gunner Lucas was killed in action on 29 October 1942. He was 22 years old. His headstone in El Alamein War Cemetery, Egypt, is inscribed 'The happy memories of dear John are our greatest treasure. RIP.'

 

John Lucas is commemorated on a bank war memorial at NatWest London South Kensington Station branch.
