John Lawrence was born in Fife in 1914, the son of Robert and Ellen M Lawrence. He worked for Commercial Bank of Scotland at its Dunfermline branch. Outside work, he was well known in his area as an accomplished violinist.
Lawrence was a territorial soldier, and during the Second World War left the bank to go on full time military service. By 1945 he was a Lieutenant in the Royal Armoured Corps. He was killed in an accident in Italy on 24 June 1945. He was 31 years old and left a widow, Joan.
John Lawrence is commemorated on a bank war memorial at Gogarburn campus, Edinburgh.
