Francis Lowry

Bank: Westminster Bank

Place of work: London Chiswick branch

Died: 19 February 1944

Francis Thomas Evelyn Lowry was born in London on 16 March 1887, the son of Thomas and Mary Ann Lowry. As a young man he worked as a footman before serving in the Royal Army Service Corps in the First World War. After demobilisation he worked for some time as a motor driver, but in December 1920 he joined London County Westminster & Parr's Bank (later known as Westminster Bank) as messenger at its Chiswick branch. As part of the role he and his wife Hilda, whom he married in 1921, lived in a flat above the branch.

During an air raid on the night of 18-19 February 1944 a bomb fell close to the Lowrys' flat. Lowry was reported missing, and some days later his body was found under fallen masonry. He was 56 years old.

Francis Lowry is commemorated on a bank war memorial at NatWest London Chiswick branch.
