Francis Lovett

Francis Hugh Lovett was born on 1 February 1914, the son of Katherine Maud and William De Turville Lovett. He was educated at Allhallows School, Honiton. He joined the staff of National Provincial Bank as a probationer at its Exmouth branch in May 1931. He was promoted to junior clerk in August 1931 before moving to Exeter Bank Branch, Exeter. In October 1933, Lovett was promoted to clerk. He moved to South Molton branch in January 1936, and joined the head office relief staff in February 1939. His manager at South Molton branch remarked on his excellent conduct in and out of office, and noted how he took ‘a very intelligent interest in everything’. 

 

In July 1940 Lovett left the bank to go on military service. He served with the 2nd King Edward VII's Own Gurkha Rifles (The Sirmoor Rifles) and achieved the rank of Second Lieutenant. He died in Malaya on 29 January 1942. He was 27 years old.
