Frank Ernest Kirby was born on 24 July 1920, the son of Sarah Elizabeth Olive and Edwin Henry Kirby. He was educated at County School, Sidcup and Chester College, Havon. He joined the staff of National Provincial Bank as a probationer at its London Lombard Street Office in February 1937. He was promoted to junior clerk in May 1937 before moving to London Strand branch in August of that year. He was promoted to clerk in 1939. He was remembered by his colleagues as a keen sportsman.
In October 1940 Kirby left the bank to go on military service, joining the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. He underwent training in Rhodesia before returning to England for operational duties in 1941. On 8 November 1942, Sergeant Kirby failed to return from a flight and was presumed to have been killed in action. He was 22 years old.
