John Kenneth Jones was born on 12 June 1917, the son of John Charles and Elsie Winifred Jones. He was educated at Rock Ferry High School and Dynevan Secondary School. He joined the staff of National Provincial Bank as a probationer at Llandovery branch in October 1935. He was promoted to clerk in January 1938 and moved to Cowbridge branch a month later.

In January 1940 Jones left the bank to go on war service, joining the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Sergeant Jones died while on active service on 9 June 1942, three days before his 25th birthday.
