Henry Bruce Stirling Johnston was born on 10 April 1920, the son of Robert Hector and Kathleen Hariot Johnston. He was educated at Wellingborough School. He joined the staff of National Provincial Bank as a probationer at Weymouth branch in December 1935. He was promoted to clerk in April 1939.
In June 1940 Johnston left the bank to go on war service, joining the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. In August 1941 Sergeant Johnston was reported missing from air operations. It was later confirmed that he had died when the Wellington bomber in which he was serving crashed just off the coast of Denmark as it returned from a bombing raid on Kiel on 19 August 1941. He was 21 years old.
