Edgar Stewart Jones was born on 21 December 1919, the son of Leonard Read Jones, the manager of London St Giles Circus branch of National Provincial Bank, and his wife Alice May. He was educated at Latymer Upper School, Hammersmith. He joined the staff of his father's bank as a probationer in September 1936, working at London Piccadilly branch. He moved to London Ealing branch in November 1938 and was promoted to clerk in January 1939.
On the outbreak of war Jones left the bank to go on war service in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Sergeant Jones was killed in action on 9 April 1941. He was 21 years old.
