David Henry Jenkins James was born on 22 October 1909, the son of Elizabeth and David Phillip James. He was educated at Cardigan County Intermediate School. He joined the staff of National Provincial Bank as a probationer at Llandyssul branch in June 1926. He was promoted to clerk in October 1928. He moved to Cardiff branch in October 1930, to Birmingham branch a few years later, to Manchester branch in January 1936, to Coventry branch in December 1940 and to Newbury branch in March 1941.
In November 1941 James left the bank to go on war service, joining the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. On 26 July 1942 Leading Aircraftman James was killed in a flying accident in England. He was 32 years old.
