Anthony Channar Joy was born on 20 September 1920, the son of Thomas Channar Joy, manager of West Southbourne branch of National Provincial Bank, and his wife Irene. He was educated at Steyning Grammar School. He joined the staff of his father's bank as a probationer in March 1937, working at the bank's New Milton branch. He was promoted to clerk in July 1939.
In October 1939 Joy left the bank to go on war service, joining the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve. By 1942 he held the rank of Sub-Lieutenant and was serving on board HM Trawler Notts County. On 8 March 1942 the ship was torpedoed south of Iceland, sinking with the loss of all crew. Sub-Lieutenant Joy was 21 years old.
