Alfred Charles Michael Jefferson was born on 3 October 1918, the son of Harry Gregory Jefferson and his wife Nina Elizabeth. He joined the staff of Westminster Bank in February 1936 at its Kettering branch, where he was known to his colleagues as Mike. A bank colleague later recalled, 'Once the crust of his quiet reserve was penetrated a most likeable personality was discovered and his friendship was well worthwhile.'
Outside work Jefferson was a keen sportsman, especially enjoying lawn tennis. He was also a territorial soldier, a member of the Northamptonshire Yeomanry. He was mobilised for active service at the outbreak of war in September 1939 and served with his regiment for the next five years.
Corporal Jefferson was killed in Normandy on 19 July 1944. He was 25 years old.
Alfred Jefferson is commemorated on a bank war memorial at NatWest Kettering branch where his name is given as Michael Jefferson.
