Thomas Wilson Irwin was born on 17 April 1921. He joined the staff Westminster Bank in June 1938, working at its Liverpool Market branch. Outside work he was a territorial soldier, serving in the Cheshire Regiment.
As a territorial, Irwin was mobilised at the outbreak of war in September 1939. He later transferred to the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, training as a navigator in Canada and the USA.
Flight Lieutenant Irwin was killed during a night-flying training exercise on 27 April 1944, 10 days after his 23rd birthday.
Thomas Irwin is commemorated on a bank war memorial at NatWest Liverpool City Office branch.
