William Austin Hughes was born in about 1923, the son of Sydney and Jane Hughes. He worked for Glyn, Mills & Co at its head office in Lombard Street, London.

During the Second World War Hughes left the bank to go on war service, joining the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. On 20 December 1943 Pilot Officer Hughes died as a result of an accident in Canada. He was 20 years old.
