Richard James Travers Hawkes was born on 18 July 1922, the son of Edgar Cecil and Rosa May Hawkes. He joined the temporary wartime staff of Westminster Bank in October 1939, working at the bank's London Northcote Road branch.
He later left the bank to go on war service, becoming a Flight Sergeant in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. He was killed on 28 June 1944, as part of the crew of a Lancaster which was shot down by an enemy plane as it returned home from a bombing mission, crashing only a few miles short of its home base at RAF Tuddenham, Suffolk.
