Peter Heywood was born on 31 August 1920, the son of the Reverend James Walter Heywood and his wife Phyllis. He joined the staff of District Bank as a junior at its Hebden Bridge branch in November 1936.
In October 1940 Heywood left the bank to go on military service, joining the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. In October 1942 he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. On 12 August 1943 Flight Lieutenant Heywood was reported missing, later presumed killed, when his Stirling bomber was lost in a raid over Germany. He was 22 years old.
