Kenneth William Hurley was born on 8 May 1925, the son of Joseph and Ella Annie Hurley. He was educated at King's School, Grantham and Sir Joseph Williamson's Mathematical School, Rochester. He joined the staff of District Bank as a temporary clerk at its Warrington branch in September 1942.

 

In June 1943, shortly after his 18th birthday, Hurley left the bank to go on war service, joining the Royal Navy. By summer 1944 he was serving on board HMS Quorn, a hunt-class destroyer involved in supporting the Normandy landings. Quorn was hit and sunk by a human torpedo on 3 August 1944, with the loss of 130 crew, including Leading Writer Hurley. He was 19 years old.
