Gordon Robert Howell was born on 29 September 1918, the son of John and Ethel Maud Howell. He was educated at Burdett Coutts School, Buckingham Gate School and Emanuel School, all in London. He joined the staff of District Bank as a junior at its London Cornhill branch in December 1935. He moved to Harrow branch in 1937 and to London Waterloo Place branch in March 1939.
In April 1940 Howell left the bank to go on military service, joining the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. On 8 July 1944 Pilot Officer Howell was recorded missing, later presumed killed, as part of the crew of a Lancaster bomber which crashed after being hit by flak over France. He was 25 years old.
