Fred Holland Hughes was born on 15 December 1926, the son of James and Mary Hughes. He was educated at Chester City Grammar School and joined the temporary wartime staff of Westminster Bank at its Ellesmere Port branch in September 1943, when he was 16 years old.
In January 1945 Hughes left the bank to go on war service, becoming a Private in the East Yorkshire Regiment. He died in an accident while stationed in Austria in January 1948, just days before he was due to be demobilised and sent home. He was 21 years old.
Fred Hughes is commemorated on a bank war memorial at NatWest Ellesmere Port branch.
