Frank Hastings Hardy was born on 14 March 1918, the son of Nora and Harold Hastings Hardy. He joined the staff of District Bank as a junior at its Chorley branch in June 1936. He was promoted to clerk at South Shore branch in 1937 and moved to Preston 35 Fishergate branch in August 1939.
In June 1940 Hardy left the bank to go on military service, joining the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve. Sub-Lieutenant Hardy was killed in Normandy on D-Day, 6 June 1944, when his landing craft received a direct hit. He was 26 years old and left a widow, Elizabeth, whom he had married six months earlier.
