Ernest Arthur Hole was born on 8 August 1911, the son of George and Louisa Hole. He was educated at Wilson's Grammar School, Camberwell. He joined the staff of Glyn, Mills & Co in May 1929 at its head office in Lombard Street, London. His colleagues later remembered his 'devotion to duty, of his eagerness to be doing something really effective in the winning of the War and of the affection with which he was regarded wherever he went and we too from our long association and friendship with him in the office and on the cricket field know how fundamentally true of him are these expressions of appreciation.'

Outside work Hole was a member of the Territorial Army, having joined the 4/5 Bn The Buffs in about 1937. He was mobilised as a Captain at the outbreak of the Second World War and saw 4 years of active service in France, Malta and the Middle East. He was promoted to Major in 1943. On 14 November 1943 Major Hole was killed on the island of Leros, Greece. He was 32 years old and left a widow, Winifred.
