Derek Alexander Clemence Hamilton was born on 22 May 1924, the son of Harold A Hamilton and his wife Florence Mildred. He worked as a junior shipping clerk before joining the temporary wartime staff Westminster Bank in December 1939. From January 1940 he was based at the bank's London Bloomsbury branch.
Hamilton later left the bank to go on war service, becoming a Pilot Officer in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. He was killed on 12 September 1944 when his aircraft was lost on an air raid over Germany. He was 20 years old.
