David Balfour Hume was born in 1920, the son of Alison and William Hume. He worked for National Bank of Scotland at its branch in Kirkwall, Orkney.
During the Second World War Hume left the bank to go on military service, becoming a Flying Officer in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. He was killed in action in Egypt on 22 January 1944. He was 24 years old.
David Hume is commemorated on a bank war memorial at Gogarburn campus, Edinburgh.
