Clifford John Hamment was born on 20 May 1923, the son of William James and Eleanor May Hamment. He was educated at Southgate County School, after which he worked as a grocer's assistant for a short time before joining the staff of National Provincial Bank as a probationer in June 1939 at London Finsbury Circus branch. He was promoted to clerk in October 1941.
In the same week that he was promoted to clerk Hamment left the bank to go on war service, completing a Royal Air Force short university course at Southampton before going on to flying training in Canada. He passed out top of his flying course. Just a few weeks later, on 18 April 1943, Pilot Officer Hamment was reported missing, believed killed after the aircraft in which he was flying in reconnaissance operations over the Gulf of St Lawrence did not return. He was 19 years old.
