Bruce Alfred Hawkins was born on 27 May 1919, the son of William and Elsie Ruth Hawkins. He was educated at Sloane School, Chelsea. He joined the staff of National Provincial Bank as a probationer in January 1937 in the chief accountant's department at the bank's London head office. He was promoted to clerk in April 1939 and moved to Bayswater branch in April 1939.
In October 1939 Hawkins left the bank to go on war service, joining the Royal Navy. Ordinary Seaman Hawkins was serving on board HMS Glasgow when he was reported missing, later presumed to have drowned on 22 March 1941. He was 21 years old.
