Arthur Noel Hampson was born on 25 December 1919, the son of Frederick William and Esther Ada Hampson. He joined the staff of Westminster Bank in May 1936, working at the bank's Hindley branch. His older brother, John, also worked for Westminster Bank, at Sheffield branch. Outside work Arthur was a keen rugby player and was elected captain of the Wigan Old Boys RUFC at the age of 19.
In December 1939 Hampson left the bank to go on war service, becoming a wireless operator and air gunner in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
Sergeant Hampson was killed on 31 August 1941 when he was hit by flak as his Wellington bomber was returning from an operational flight over Germany. He was 21 years old.
Arthur Hampson is commemorated on a bank war memorial at NatWest Wigan branch.
