Thomas David Irfon Griffith was born on 27 December 1913, the son of Margaret Ann and John Albert Griffith. He attended Cowbridge Grammar School before joining the staff of National Provincial Bank as a probationer at Porthcawl branch in April 1931. He was promoted to junior clerk in July 1931 and to clerk in July 1933. He moved to Newport How branch in April 1937 and to Aberystwyth branch in May 1939. He was known as ‘Griff’ to his colleagues, with whom he was very popular.
In June 1940 Griffith became one of the first members of staff at Aberystwyth branch to enlist, joining the Royal Welch Fusiliers. He undertook officer training, and in January 1944 attained the rank of Captain. Captain Griffith was killed in Normandy on 17 July 1944, during preparatory attacks for Operation Goodwood. He was 30 years old and left a widow, Mary Flora, and a daughter.
