Robert Blane Gray was born in Auchinleck, Ayrshire in 1914. He worked for Commercial Bank of Scotland at its chief London office on Lombard Street. 

 

During the Second World War Gray left the bank to go on war service with the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve, and by 1945 he held the rank of Temporary Lieutenant. He was killed in action on 17 August 1944, when he was about 30 years old. He was posthumously mentioned in dispatches. 

 

Robert Gray is commemorated on a bank war memorial at Gogarburn campus, Edinburgh
