John Richard Griffiths was born on 22 May 1913, the son of Ivor and Margaret Griffiths. He was educated at Howard Gardens Municipal Secondary School and City of Cardiff Technical College before joining the staff of National Provincial Bank as a probationer at Cowbridge branch in May 1930. He was promoted to junior clerk in October 1930 and to clerk in October 1932. He moved to Newport How branch in February 1934.
In September 1940 Griffiths left the bank to go on military service. He joined the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Serjeant Griffiths was killed on 25 November 1941 when his plane, a Bristol Beaufort on a mine-laying mission, was shot down. He was 28 years old and left a widow, Margaret, whom he had married in April 1937.
