John Procter Grundy was born on 30 April 1917. He joined the staff of District Bank as a junior at its head office in Manchester in June 1934.

In September 1940 Grundy left the bank to go on military service, joining the Royal Artillery. Second Lieutenant Grundy was killed in a car accident on 30 October 1941. He was 24 years old.
