John Douglas Galloway was born on 5 June 1910. He was educated at Bancroft School, and joined the staff of Westminster Bank in September 1928. From July 1933 he was based at the bank's London Blackheath branch. Outside work he was a member of the bank's staff sports club, and particularly enjoyed playing rugby and cricket. 

 

He was also a territorial soldier, and at the outbreak of war in 1939 he was mobilised with his battalion of the King's Royal Rifle Corps. In spring 1941 he received a commission in the Leicestershire Regiment, and later still he transferred to the Royal Warwickshire Regiment. 

 

Lieutenant Galloway was killed in action in North Africa on 18 March 1943. He was 32 years old and left a widow, Jean, and two young sons.
