Charles Edward Graysmark was born on 5 September 1920, the son of Leslie Charles Graysmark and his wife Louisa Cecilia. He joined Westminster Bank in September 1937 at its Staines branch. He was also a member of the bank’s staff sports club, playing cricket and football.

 

In September 1940 Graysmark left the bank to join the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. He trained as a pilot in Canada, after which he was posted to 611 Squadron of Fighter Command. For a time he was pilot of the 'Heston and Isleworth Spitfire', which had been paid for by subscriptions from residents of his hometown, Isleworth.

 

Sergeant Graysmark was later posted to Malta, and died there on 12 May 1942, of wounds received in action. He was 21 years old and left a widow, Marjorie, whom he had married just a few weeks earlier.
