William Fleming was born on 3 May 1914, the son of William and Agnes S Fleming. In May 1932, just after his 18th birthday, he went to work for the Royal Bank of Scotland as an apprentice at its Ecclefechan branch. In March 1936 he transferred to the bank's London Bishopsgate office.
In August 1940 Fleming left the bank to go on military service, becoming a pilot in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Sergeant Fleming was killed in an air crash near Kinloss, Scotland, on 9 October 1941. He was 27 years old.
William Fleming is commemorated on a bank war memorial at 36 St Andrew Square, Edinburgh.
