Died: 14 February 1942
Thomas Edward Fitzgerald, known to his bank colleagues as Tom, was born on 27 February 1911. He joined the staff of Westminster Bank at its Liverpool Waterloo branch in February 1928. From about 1938 he worked in the bank's Foreign department in Liverpool. Outside work he was an enthusiastic sportsman, playing tennis and rugby. He was honorary secretary and a playing member of Hightown Rugby Club.
At the outbreak of the Second World War Fitzgerald left the bank to go on military service, and by 1942 he was a Lieutenant in the Reconnaissance Corps. He was killed in the Far East on 14 February 1942, although his death was not officially confirmed until after the end of the war. He left a widow, Ellen, whom he had married in 1938, and two young children. His obituary in the bank's staff magazine recalled 'His healthy outlook on life and cheerful disposition made him an ideal companion, and he always displayed great willingness in helping others in their work.'
Thomas Fitzgerald is commemorated on a bank war memorial at NatWest Liverpool City Office branch.
