Eric Ford was born on 16 July 1914, the son of Sidney William and Elsie Ford. He was educated at Newcastle High School, where he was captain of the swimming club and a member of the cricket and football teams. In November 1930 Ford joined the staff of District Bank as a junior at its Nantwich branch. He was promoted to clerk at Biddulph branch in 1938 and moved to Birmingham branch in April 1939. A keen sportsman, Ford was a member of Trentham Swimming Club, Tretham Park Golf Club, and the Dominics Rugby Union Club, and he represented District Bank in several golf tournaments. He joined the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve in June 1939.

 

In September 1939 Ford left the bank to go on military service. Pilot Officer Ford was reported missing on 24 September 1940 after failing to return from a night flight. He was later determined to have been killed on 18 September 1940, when the Whitley bomber he was flying was shot down over the Netherlands. He was 26 years old.

This gentleman was my grandmother's cousin and we have a photo of him.
