John Cyril Eyres was born on 10 December 1918, the son of John and Mabel Eyres. He was educated at Manchester Grammar School and joined the staff of District Bank as a junior at its Higher Openshaw branch in November 1936. He was promoted to clerk at Disley branch in 1939.

In September 1939 Eyres left the bank to go on military service, joining the Cheshire Regiment. Lance Corporal Eyres died in Ashurst Military Hospital, Oxfordshire on 29 July 1944. He was 25 years old.
