Robert Matthew Dalgliesh was born on 20 December 1912, the son of Robert Dalgleish, a ploughman, and his wife Margaret. He joined the staff of National Bank of Scotland in May 1930 as an apprentice at its Lochmaben branch and went on to work in branches in Biggar and Edinburgh Southside. 

 

During the Second World War Dalgliesh left the bank to join the Royal Navy. He was serving on board HMS Laforey on 30 March 1944 when, during a hunt for an enemy submarine, she was sunk with the loss of most her crew, including Petty Officer Dalgliesh. He was 31 years old.

 

Robert Dalgliesh is commemorated on a bank war memorial at Gogarburn campus, Edinburgh
